EMU - Music Forum - Week 3

Dictionary definition of a Producer: a person responsible for the financial and administrative aspects of a stage, film, television, or radio production; the person who exercises general supervision of a production and is responsible chiefly for raising money, hiring technicians and artists, etc., required to stage a play, make a motion picture, or the like. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/producer Before week 3's forum i thought the main attributes of a music Producer where as follows: Excellent Interpersonal skills: -May have to motivate the artist or make them feel comfortable. -May even have to help the processes of different artists working together and help to achieve a certain vision/sound/final product as well as time a budget based decisions -Settle disputes. Excellent Judgement skills: -Use there experience in the studio/ decision making skills -Regarding time management ( from personnel experience) -May be trying to attain a certain sound During this weeks class i learnt: A Producer's job is to create, shape and mould a piece of music in accordance with their vision. As a result, a majority of (great) producers' work can by identified by certain characteristics and artistic traits distinct to there own personal styles. However, different producers may work in a variety of different ways and their individual roles, or overall contribution to the final product, may also differ. I believe a Producers role in the production of music recorded (by an artist) may be one or a mixture of many, ranging from: - being responsible for a finshed products sound. - capturing the energy of an artist or an artists best performance. - working on song arrangements/ editing an artists music. - co-writing songs with artists. - choosing which songs make the final cut of an album (or even the order in which they appear) - co-writing songs - being employed by a record label to make sure an recording will be saleable product and/or finished within a certain time frame. Therefore, i think it may be infered that an artist collaborating with different Producers will yeild unique results, as well as have distinctive properties characteristic of the Producer, and vice versa. As an example, it may be said that the relationship they have is similar to the one held between film directors and actors. extra resources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_producer
